Life is a Race!
A
well-known mystic once said, "If life is a race, we all should aim to get
to the finish line faster". Knowingly or unknowingly we all are heading
towards our finish line without experiencing life as much as we can.
Just as a
tree whose sole purpose is to grow fully and bear fruits & flowers, our
purpose in life (if there is one) must be to develop as a person and reach our
peak potential.
To achieve
this, we must focus inward. In a world where time flies by at the speed of
light😇,
it is easier said than done. We tend to live life one day at a time and focus
too much on outcomes. So, for most part, life is a race where we don’t end up
learning and improving ourselves as much as we should.
However,
there is one such race that teaches you many valuable life lessons and helps
you know more about yourself. This virtuous race is called a “Marathon”.
Knowing
who you are helps you identify who you want to be. In this post, I would
like to bring out 3 such virtues that I learned from my experience of running
marathons.
1.
Mental Fortitude:
A marathon
is a crucible for mental fortitude. It demands both unwavering self-discipline
to adhere to a rigorous training schedule and the resilience to push through
the inevitable pain and fatigue. This translates powerfully to life. Whether
facing professional setbacks or personal challenges, the marathon teaches us to
build a mental reservoir of strength. We learn to control our impulses,
prioritize long-term goals over immediate comfort, and bounce back from
adversity. Just as a runner pushes through the 'wall,' we discover our capacity
to overcome obstacles we once thought insurmountable.
2.
Strategic Optimism:
Marathons
are a masterclass in strategic optimism. You don't just hope to finish; you
plan, prepare, and maintain a positive mindset throughout the gruelling
journey. This mirrors life's pursuit of meaningful goals. We must cultivate a
long-term vision, breaking down seemingly impossible tasks into manageable
steps. But vision alone isn't enough; we need the unwavering belief in our
ability to succeed, even when doubts creep in. The marathon teaches us to
reframe challenges as opportunities, to focus on progress rather than setbacks,
and to trust that consistent effort, coupled with a positive outlook, will lead
us to the finish line.
3.
Profound Self-Awareness:
The
marathon is a journey inward as much as it is a physical feat. It forces you to
confront your limitations, both physical and mental. You become acutely aware
of your body's signals, your emotional responses, and your inner dialogue. This
profound self-awareness is invaluable in navigating life's complexities. By
understanding our strengths and weaknesses, we can leverage our talents
effectively and address our shortcomings. We learn to listen to our inner
voice, to recognize our triggers, and to make choices that align with our
values. The marathon is a mirror, reflecting our true selves and empowering us
to live more authentically.
If life is
a race, I would certainly want it to be a Marathon!
Happy Running!
Well written piece on what life lessons a marathon can teach. I felt 'strategic optimism' was better phrased, 'Unwavering optimism'?
